SMDEP at the University of Louisville School Of Dentistry

The students of the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program had a blast participating in the simulation clinic within the University of Louisville Dental School. Students learned about the major landmarks of the oral cavity and were able to view into each other's mouths using dental simulation equipment. Though some were more reluctant to stick their fingers into another person's mouth, they all walked away smiling, knowing more about the human oral cavity.

The students also had the opportunity to interact with standardized patients in the simulation clinic. This clinic is where medical students complete exams that test their physician-patient interactions and skills. Groups of students were allowed private time within a replicated room to ask questions about the standardized patients and also see them in action; a very good way to motivate these young and bright scholars.

SMDEP 2012 - Week 1 in review

Day 1- MOVE-IN DAY!!! Our 80 students from all over the United States arrived in Louisville, Kentucky and moved into Community Park dorm on the beautiful University of Louisville campus. The students were greeted by Student Development Assistant 2012 staff along with past SMDEP students in the area volunteering with move-in.  Most of the day consisted of getting settled in. Around 5:30pm the group went to eat a catered dinner at the University of Louisville University Club. We ended the evening with a lively Welcome Session/Icebreaker/Orientation in the Chao Auditorium of the library.

Day 2- Students had an official welcome to the University by Dr. Ralph Fitzpatrick, Associate VP of Community Engagements. Then during the course of the day students received an academic overview of program, took a series of pretests, and listened to a presentation concerning campus safety.

Day 3- Students were taken on a campus tour and received their campus IDs and parking permits. They also took an online Myers-Briggs Personality Assessment for a later workshop. After lunch, the students had workshops on time management and professionalism followed by their first health policy session.

Day 4- Students were bussed downtown for their first day on the UofL health science campus. They started off with a warm welcome from the, Dr. Sauk, Dean of the School of Dentistry followed by a dental admissions presentation. Before lunch, students were asked for feedback concerning their experiences with the program up to this point. After a catered lunch, the students received HIPAA training and had a very interesting and  presentation on the essentials of oral hygiene.

Day 5- FIRST DAY OF CLASS! The students headed to UofL HSC and started the morning off with organic chemistry. Class was followed by a lecture on the principles of oral presentation. They ended the day with an interactive tour of the School of Medicine Standardized Patient Clinic and the Simulation Center.

Day 6: Students had their first physics class followed by a full day experiencing the Dental Simulation Center and Labs. They were able to exam their partner’s mouths as well as make molds of their fingers (normally used to make models of teeth). The evening ended with a game night in the dorm including board games and dancing on the Wii with Student Development Assistants.

Day 7 & 8: Students have the weekend to relax, study, and get to explore the city. Brunch and dinner are provided on Saturdays with no formal dining plans on Sundays.
